What an apex locator is?
Apex locators are electronic instruments highly used in endodontics that measure the impedance, position, frequency, and resistance of the surrounding material in order to locate the working length of the root canal to be endodontized. The apex of the root has a specific resistance to an electrical current which is measured by the instrument using a pair of electrodes attached to an endodontic file. Correct determination of tooth length is an important, crucial factor for the success of endodontic therapy. According to clinical studies, Apex locator's measurements are more accurate than RVG (X-ray's) measurements.
Importance of Apex locators
For a successful and properly completed endodontic treatment is a key to localize and treat the entire root canal - from the narrowest point (apex) to its visible part.
The Apex locator determines the exact length of the root canal by measuring the electrical resistance between the tissues. Thus, the dentist can also treat less accessible canal spaces.
Apex locator treatment is completely painless and quick. The life of the tooth is prolonged because the channel is fully filled.
